Tahuna Normal Intermediate pupil Jack Verhoef (12) was overall winner of the Aurora Otago Science and Technology Fair 2011.
The year 7 pupil's project - photosynthesis photos - involved reproducing photos on leaves.
He tested a number of sun-exposure lengths for the most effective print.
Jack was also a section winner - awarded the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre Award for Gifted and Talented Students in Years 7 and 8.
His was one of 265 entries from 25 Otago schools.
Last Wednesday the Tahuna team flew to Wellington [ Bee Hive ] to compete against the best 15 teams from all over NZ. The top Lit Quiz children were there and all had to face the speed buzzer to win . Mr Mills asked 75 questions from five different categories and they were difficult. At the half way mark we were 1st equal but then took the lead and held on over the last two rounds to record the win.
This was the first time Otago has ever won this competition.

Tuesday 31st May marked the end of NZ Music Month.
Tahuna joined together with Musselburgh Primary and Bayfield High School to
sing the NZ Music Month song 'Things to Remember' (Huarahi Tika) written
by pupils from Newton Central Primary school.
All classes had been practicing this song in music classes and this was a great
opportunity to get together and sing on mass.
We were also joined by Cr Bill Acklin and Mr Errol Moore president of MENZA.
Our Tahuna guitarists were assisted by Bayfield students on bass and drums
along with choir members from both Tahuna and Bayfield. Ms Jo Dryden conducted
our 'band'
Thank-you to everyone who took part, we made a great sound.
We hope you can continue celebrating NZ Music every day.
